hab ichs richtig gelesen? 5 km durchschnittsleistung am tag???? Unglaubliche Strapazen müssen sie ertragen, die Abenteurer der "Expedition Österreich"! Gleich der erste Abend war die reine Hölle aus Zeitschinderei und muskelverkrampfender Halblustigkeit. Der Moderator sprach von der "größten Expedition aller Zeiten", bei der "unzählige Kilometer" zu bewältigen seien. Mit "großen und kleinen Dramen" müsse gerechnet werden. Große Dramen? Vielleicht erwandert sich jemand eine Blase an der Ferse, aber das wird schwer zu schaffen sein. Denn bei den "unzähligen Kilometern" handelt es sich um 387 Kilometer, die bis 20. September zurückzulegen sind. Tagesschnitt: Fünf (5) Kilometer. Nach fünf Kilometern würde sich selbst ein indischer Pilger, der sich bei jedem Schritt bäuchlings auf den Boden wirft, fragen, was er mit dem angebrochenen Vormittag tun soll. Halt, nicht unfair sein - die "Expedition" muss ja auch Berge und Gewässer bezwingen! Das ist wahr, und Profi-Bergführer halten ihnen dabei das Handerl und das Seil. Aber was wirklich belastend sein dürfte: Sie müssen die künstlich aufgeregten Moderatoren ertragen. Eine Kostprobe gab es schon vor dem Start mit der anzüglichen Frage, ob denn die Kandidaten daran dächten, nachts in den Zelten ... eh schon wissen. So ist es recht. Bachelor, schau oba! Sex & Quatsch sind supertoll, wir quasseln euch die Birne voll! Bis sie so weich ist, dass ihr für 50 Cent anruft, wer Wochensieger sein soll. Dann dürfen sich die Kandidaten nach und nach gegenseitig hinausschmeißen, das fördert Mobbing und Schleimerei. Aber was sollten sie denn sonst die ganze Zeit tun, bei fünf Kilometern am Tag ... vom 07.07.2004

Tuesday afternoon three-time solo RAAM winner Wolfgang Fasching finished his seventh RAAM in 9 days 02:45, over five hours behind Rookie-of-the-Year, Michael Trevino, and almost 17 hours behind winner Robic. Fasching proved what a classy rider he is by graciously accepting defeat. He climbed up onto the finish stage looking very fit with the skin on his upper arms peeling off. He said he had no real problems other than the heat on the first day, and not riding fast enough. He said he felt the best at the finish line this year out of all seven RAAMs he has done. He said he doesn't do specific sleep deprivation training like Robic does. If he didn't have heat trouble on the first day in the desert, he would have finished second. Except for his wife Doris, he had pretty much a new crew this year. Doris said she can't feel emotionally for Wolfgang during the race. Without anybody on his crew telling him how he was doing, he knew he was in third place and was OK with it. He realizes that winning might not come that easily to him anymore. He might come back. In sports it is said that you should quit while on top (like John Elway did winning two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos), but how does a person know their best years are behind them unless they start declining in performance? Fasching helped Robic prepare for the RAAM a lot this year, but he doesn't have time to train with Robic in Europe. Wolfgang only began training for RAAM in April which was not enough time. When I asked Fasching if he thought 2001 RAAM winner Andre Clavadetscher could have won RAAM this year, Wolfgang said Andre only cares about beating him in RAAM. Fasching hopes that more American riders start racing in European ultra races. He said once a rider gets so far ahead or behind you in RAAM, time differences become unimportant. Wolfgang says he doesn't care about being called the best ultracyclist in the world. He still has a lot of respect for Kish. He is writing books and marketing himself well in Austria.

TREVINO HANGS TOUGH AFTER MID-RACE CONTROVERSY Race Administration Unsympathetic to Either Side in the Matter ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 29, 2004) – Four days after the flare-up, the dust began to settle on a controversy that raged during the middle of the race, possibly effected the outcome, and certainly made the newcomers Jure Robic (Slovenia) and Mike Trevino (San Diego, Calif.) acutely aware of the psychological warfare that is a traditional part of the Insight Race Across America (RAAM). It is nothing new for one rider in RAAM to be disbelieving of another rider’s average speed over a particular stretch of the country, and by the half-way point the Robic camp – competing in only their second RAAM – found themselves puzzling over the way rookie Mike Trevino was tenaciously able to hang on and remain in contention with the Slovenian former road-race cycling champion. Accusations soon started flying. Robic – representing the Slovenian military – deployed one of his support vehicles to spy on Trevino, and the problem was compounded when the race officials monitoring these two riders had problems with the brakes in their van and withdrew from the race for 18 hours while repairs were made, leaving the two riders unmarshalled for a period of a few hours. The organization acted within an hour of hearing about the problems to bring in extra officials, but different circumstances worked against the situation, and distances to be covered were as much as 300 miles. Within 24 hours both of the two leading riders in the elite Solo category were under the watchful eye of an official. Meanwhile tension within the Robic and Trevino camps was reaching boiling point. Trevino responded to Robic’s spy car by enlisting one of his own – a move permitted within the rules of RAAM. Several hours later an official caught up with the Robic spy car and issued the team a 15-minute penalty (added to Robic’s finishing time) for ‘caravanning’ which is when cars from two teams get too close to one another and cause a potential obstruction to passing road traffic. Fatigue blended with stress and frustration to create a bitter cocktail. Angry messages were posted to the Robic team web site by team members who were concerned the organization was biased against them. Hate mail started coming into the race administration from fans of Robic. The race organization moved to bring matters under control by informing the Robic camp of a rule that prevents teams from denigrating the race. Once they learned that official vehicles had been dispatched to both theirs and Trevino’s team, the Slovenians were satisfied that appropriate action had been taken and a retraction appeared on the Robic web site. His crew members later admitted that they might have acted too hastily in the heat of the moment. The controversy, however, was not over. Meanwhile, in the Trevino camp at roughly the same time, a reporter for the race’s in-house television crew asked Trevino to comment on the allegations of cheating made by the Robic team. This was more than the San Diego software developer was prepared to take, and the team imposed a media ban that remained in effect until the run into Atlantic City. The incident with the journalist was the last straw for Trevino, a former high school wrestler and line-backer in his college football team, who then became an ultra-distance runner before stepping up to RAAM. Struggling with his motivation to stay in the race, on Friday evening, June 25, he climbed off his bicycle and went for a 20-minute run to ground him while he reflected on the situation. On return to his team car Trevino remounted continued to Atlantic City – although his tussle with Robic for line honors was by then long over. Trevino’s result – second place in the Solo Men’s category – identifies him as a remarkable athlete who pulled off an impressive feat. This is the result that several great RAAM champions have gotten in their first year of the race. The determination he showed in staying with Robic for the first half of the race made Trevino’s 2004 campaign all the more impressive. However, after his 2004 experience Trevino – while admitting that the complexity of the race was fascinating – would not immediately commit to entering again. Of course RAAM veteran and co-owner Lon Haldeman has seen it all before – and he permitted himself a wry chuckle and a demure lowering of the eyes on hearing accounts of the events. Haldeman recounted stories from his days of racing RAAM, where he committed acts of trickery with the express purpose of inducing paranoia in his rivals, playing on their frayed nerves and tired minds. “We used to get up to all sorts of things, far worse that that,” Said Haldeman with a smile. RAAM race director, Jim Pitre, himself a record-setting winner of the two-person team division was not overly sympathetic for either the Trevino or the Robic camps, and said: “There was no proof of any cheating. With proof we’d take a different view of the matter. People do not take into account that in any kind of racing mind games are played. This just happens to be a more drawn-out saga, and there are other factors such as sleep deprivation thrown into to complicate it further. This is a perfect example of how people’s minds get set sideways by the race. I see this kind of thing as just a part of RAAM. They’re big boys, I say ‘get over it’.” Almost six hours after Trevino’s eagerly-awaited arrival in Atlantic City, three-time winner Wolfgang Fasching of Austria pedaled a tired cadence along the Atlantic Expressway to complete his seventh RAAM. For Fasching, who counts Robic among his personal friends, this had not quite been his year. Lack of proper training was one reason he gave for never managing to mount a challenge to the leaders – having decided to compete in the 2004 race as late as April. Around lunchtime in Atlantic City, the extraordinary and ebullient Grand Pac Masters team rolled gleefully onto the legendary Boardwalk to complete a record breaking ride in their age division, of 7 days, 6 hours and 31 minutes. As the evening came, the wife and husband team of Terri Gooch and George Thomas riding for VeloWear/Co-Motion, from Corvallis, Oregon, completed their trek in the Two-Person Mixed category, in 7 days, 18 hours, 5 minutes. Thomas, a six-time veteran of RAAM, has now ridden the race as a Solo, with Gooch on a tandem, and now with Gooch in a mixed team. A few minutes later, Germany’s Team Frauleins rolled triumphantly up the boards to complete their first RAAM and take second place in the 4-Person Women’s category with a time of 8 days, 4 hours, 40 minutes. Day 7: June 26 (10:14 am EST) - June 27 (10:14 am EST) by Danny Chew TEAMS: In the two-person mixed race, Race Across America organizers, George Thomas and Terri Gooch (VeloWear/Co-Motion) now lead rivals No Limits by 17 hours. Thomas told me he absolutely loves night riding on RAAM and will sleep in the afternoons which are toughest on him. It looks like there will finally be finishers in this category, which seems to have been jinxed in years past. SOLO: With less than 500 miles to go, Slovenia’s Juré Robic increased his lead over rookie sensation Michael Trevino to eight hours. A general rule in RAAM is that you can only catch a rider if they are within 10% of the remaining distance. At 15 mph, eight hours corresponds with 120 miles, so Trevino would need 1,200 miles left to close a 120 mile gap. Unless Robic has some sort of catastrophe, there is simply not enough of America left for Trevino to catch Robic. Robic rode 2,490 miles his first 7 days (week). This is 379 miles ahead of Robic's 2003 pace. Fasching has closed the once eight-hour gap between him and Trevino to four hours. If Fasching’s crew is feeding him info on Trevino, he can smell second place like he did back in 1998 when Tatrai won. Fourth place Enrico DeAngeli has made a very impressive surge to break out of the pack of four riders he was in. To open up a five-hour gap on Kish, he went two nights in a row without any significant sleep. A person usually can't do this in the middle of RAAM without paying a big price for it down the road. Kish is in fifth place close to David Haase, who is having the ride of his life. Valsesia is currently in seventh place but within striking distance of fourth place. Andrew Otto continues to ride in Shermerland - too far behind to catch the rider ahead of him and too far ahead to be caught by the rider behind him. This makes for a relaxing RAAM for both Otto and his crew. When eleventh place rider, Peter Holy, dropped out from saddle sores at time station #29 in Missouri, Randy Van Zee inherited last place taking pressure off him from another rider breathing down his back. However, he has to worry about his average speed staying over 10.2 mph to be an official finisher. Good thing he is currently a high ten mph average to allow for slowing over the Appalachian Mountains towards the end. Notes: On late Friday night/early Saturday morning in Indiana at his sleep stop, Mike Trevino traded his cycling shoes for running shoes and went for a short run with his girlfriend Amanda. An observer noticed that Mike put his bike down and was maybe going to drop out, until Amanda was smart enough to use running (Mike's primary sport) to get his mind back in the right place to finish RAAM. I would like to thank Mike's crew for doing such a terrific job keeping him motivated and on his bike.

Was für ein Stück Glück, dass ich gestern gewimpt habe. Wetter und Muskelkater...Heute bei der Wienerwaldrunde konnt ich gar net stehenbleiben, meine Oberschenkel tun so weh, ich wär nicht mehr aufs Bike gekommen. Sollte mit dem Kicken aufhören, zumindest am grossen Feld

weil sich hier gar nix tut, marco, vielleicht startest mal nen aufruf: früher gabs doch noch das "bike for fun" und da stand dich auch immer mal was über die top-6 rennen drinnen. auch über diverse troubles bei rennen. meine hefte hab ich mal bei einem umzug entsorgt sonst würd ich dir nachsehen....

alf-way Home Riders Cross Midpoint in Insight Race Across America El Dorado, Kans. (June 24, 2004) – Shortly before 6:30 a.m. EST, RAAM’s lone recumbent team, ALS Lightning, became the first team to cruise over the half-way mark in this year’s race. The four-man team riding recumbent bikes outfitted with lightweight composite shells seeks to break the record held since 1989 for crossing the country in five days, one hour, eight minutes with an average speed of 24.02 mph. They are currently traveling at an average pace of 24.47 mph. Another record in question is the record for most mileage during a 24-hour period. Between 8:36 yesterday and 8:43 today, ALS Lightning covered 676.6 miles from Mountinair, N.M. to Yates Center, Kans. Heavy thunderstorms late last night and early this morning did nothing to cool the contest between four-man teams Action Sports and Vail - Go Fast. From New Mexico, across the northwest corners of Texas and Oklahoma, and through Kansas, roughly 25 minutes was all that separated Vail Go – Fast’s lead from Action Sports’ fervid pursuit. At time of release, both teams had checked in from Jefferson City, Missouri with Vail Go – Fast holding a 45 minute lead over Action Sports. According to RAAM veterans, the second half of the race typically triggers some surprises as well as some brazen race strategies. If each four-man team expects the other to ease up on the throttle during the second half, opponents might have to sleep with one eye open. Fit and fast solo rider Jure Robic briefly let his lead slip today when Michael Trevino opened up a 12 minute gap at Mount Vernon, Kans. Robic quickly chased down Trevino and put him behind by 54 minutes by the next time station at El Dorado, Kans. Spooked by Trevino’s stealth and prowess, Robic’s crew kept watch over the second place rider throughout the afternoon and into the evening. At time of release, Robic is ahead of Trevino by two hours, seven minutes. The eight-person Kaiser Permanente team continues to widen the gap between them and second place Team Insight. Finely tuned race strategies and an organizational structure that would make the military blush are a few of the secrets that corporate teams were willing to share prior to the start of this year’s RAAM. Four-person team rotations on eight-hour shifts allow each member of the team to properly rest before winding up to a time trial pace. At last check in Yates Center, Kans., Insight trails Kaiser Permanente by one hour, 14 minutes with team Rim-to-Rim in third place at one hour, nine minutes behind Insight. All teams are still intact and seem to be fortifying their strategies as they roll eastward. The solo field is down to 15 racers from 19. The modest two-man team TBW Brasil stays a steady pace at 15.8 mph with Team New England almost over the Kansas state line from Oklahoma. Race Notes: Upon learning about RAAM in his local newspaper, fast-food restaurant manager in Pratt, Kans., Steve Strecker was happy to serve a RAAM team that came into his restaurant. He then extended an invitation to all RAAM participants on the course to stop by for a meal, courtesy of Strecker and his staff. Solo racer Pius Achermann withdrew from the race at 9:50 today in Dalhart, Texas. After being brought to the hospital for saddle sores, it was decided that he could not continue. Solo racer, Tracy McKay, withdrew from the race at 11:12 today in Vaughn, N.M. McKay, who was experiencing lots of pain in his leg, consulted with his doctor for a strained quadriceps. Following that he felt that it was too painful to continue. In a phone conversation with McKay, he said that he will give the other riders encouragement along the way back to the finish line in Atlantic City, N.J.
